Three ways to plan this trip
Pick one site and relax into it, or take on both and accept a long day.
Every logistics decision here comes down to one fact: Zaanse Schans is a short train ride north of Amsterdam, and Kinderdijk is a short boat ride from Rotterdam, in the opposite direction. There's no route that makes both of them convenient from the same base without real transit time in between.
Option A — Zaanse Schans as a half-day from Amsterdam
The easiest, most flexible plan if you're based in Amsterdam and want one relaxed morning or afternoon.
| Step | Time |
| Sprinter train, Amsterdam Centraal → Zaandijk Zaanse Schans | ~17 min |
| Walk from station to the village | ~15 min |
| Walking the village, mills, and one paid attraction | 2–3 hours |
| Return journey | ~30 min |
Total round trip, door to door: under 4 hours, comfortably fitting a late-morning start with the rest of the day free in Amsterdam.
Option B — Kinderdijk as a half-day, based from Rotterdam
Just as easy, if your base is Rotterdam rather than Amsterdam.
| Step | Time |
| Waterbus/WaterShuttle from central Rotterdam | ~26–30 min |
| Walking the towpath + one museum mill | 1.5–2.5 hours |
| Return journey | ~26–30 min |
If you're coming from Amsterdam rather than staying in Rotterdam, add the Amsterdam–Rotterdam intercity train (roughly 40 minutes each way) on either end — still a manageable single-site day, just a longer one.
Option C — Both sites, one long day
Possible. Tight. Only worth it if you genuinely can't come back another day.
| Step | Time |
| Amsterdam → Zaanse Schans (train + walk) | ~30–32 min |
| At Zaanse Schans | ~2 hours |
| Zaanse Schans → Amsterdam → Rotterdam Centraal | ~50–60 min combined |
| Rotterdam → Kinderdijk (waterbus/WaterShuttle) | ~26–30 min |
| At Kinderdijk | ~1.5 hours |
| Return to Amsterdam | ~40 min |
Realistic total
Roughly 7–8 hours door to door, of which nearly 3 hours is pure transit. It works if you start by 8:30am and accept a fast, focused visit at each stop rather than a leisurely one — and it falls apart quickly if the direct Rotterdam–Kinderdijk WaterShuttle isn't running that day (it operates daily only from 23 March to 25 October), forcing a slower transfer route.
